FAQs

  • What is an Ocean3D scan tour?

An Ocean3D scan tour is a completely three-dimensional representation of your space. Everyone can walk through and experience your space as if they were actually there.

  • How does it work?

We position our Matterport(tm) Pro 3D Camera in as many locations throughout your space as required to give an immersive experience on your tour. We use the Matterport(tm) Capture app on our iPad to control the camera and record the images and data. When we press 'Scan' on the app, the camera automatically rotates 360 degrees on the tripod. Each scan position takes about one minute.

  • Can we see an instant preview of your Space on your iPad as you scan?

For the best results, our scanning technicians need to work with as few people around as possible (mornings are often best for us) however, when they have finished scanning, you will be able to view the rough model before we upload it to the Matterport(tm) servers in California where the magic happens. Once our technician has uploaded the scan, processing begins automatically and typically takes several hours depending on how many scan positions were taken. Once completed, we can then add Mattertags(tm) such as labels and links. The whole process can take as little as one working day but, may take two or more dependent on the size and complexity of the scan and the number of tags required.

  • Can I edit out anything after the scan has been completed?

Currently, it I not possible to use any editing software such as Photoshop(tm) post scan. If there is anything sensitive or valuable you do not want to be seen on the tour, please ensure it is removed prior to our arrival. The only way to remove anything from a tour once we have carried out our scan is to carry out a complete re-shoot which is chargeable.

  • How long does it take to scan a typical home or business?

On average, it takes about 30 to 45 minutes to scan 1,000 square feet (93 meters squared) so a typical 2,000 square foot (186 meters squared) property can be scanned in about 60 to 90 minutes.

  • Is there a limit to the number of Scans in a Space?

Spaces are currently limited to a maximum of 200 scans. However, we can 'link' very large areas by carrying out two or more separate (chargeable) scans.

  • How large of an area can be scanned?

For residential or commercial properties, 200 scans are sufficient to build spaces up to approximately 10,000 square feet (930 meters squared). The exact square footage will vary depending on the layout of the property and contents.

  • How can I import a Matterport 3D Space into CAD software?

You can download an industry-standard OBJ file, which will contain both the 3D mesh and textures. For a sample OBJ file, download this ZIP file of the Golden Gate Park Visitors' Centre.

  • Can I import images from an Ocean3D tour?

Yes! All the images we use to create the walk / fly-through tours are available to download from your secure client dashboard. If you would like specific images of part of the building, please ask at the time of editing. Further images can be taken post editing for just £5.00 per image.

  • What is a Mattertag(tm) Post?

Mattertag(tm) posts are a great way to enhance your Spaces by providing additional information right when people need it. With Mattertag(tm) Posts you can anchor a short title and text description to any point in the 3D geometry. Think of them like signs in a museum. They're a great way to highlight key features in your space, home or business. For retail and hospitality customers, these tags can be used to link to ordering forms, POS and menus/ special offers. For digital content creators, the Mattertags(tm) can add context to an immersive storytelling medium.

  • Which browsers are compatible with Ocean3D tours?

We use Matterport(tm) 3D Showcase technology which uses WebGL, the modern standard for 3D content on the web. On desktop computers, WebGL is supported by the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer. On mobile devices, WebGL is supported by Safari for iOS and Chrome for Android. To check if your browser supports WebGL, visit the WebGL Test Page.

  • How do I embed an Ocean3D tour in a website?

Embedding a Space is straightforward and similar to embedding a YouTube video. Here is a sample embed code for a Matterport Space: <iframe width="853" height="480" src="http://ocean3d.co.uk/Tour/Show/PEGZnSQLcZb" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

  • Can Ocean3D tours be viewed on virtual reality systems?

Yes! Matterport VR is currently available for free in the Oculus store for Samsung Gear VR. Anyone with a compatible Samsung phone and Gear VR can download the app and start exploring Matterport Spaces in VR today. A version is also available for Cardboard headsets in the Play Store for Android phones and is now compatible with IOS. Your Matterport Spaces can also be easily converted to virtual reality with Matterport CoreVR. Learn more about VR.

  • Can I create flythrough videos?

Yes, you can easily create flythrough videos by using screen capture software like Camstudio or QuickTime. Simply run your screen capture program as you navigate through your Ocean3D tour. We are happy to create a tour for you at an additional cost if you would prefer.

  • Can I create floor plans from my Spaces?

Yes, you can order black-and-white Schematic Floor Plans for your Spaces for £45.

  • Can you scan an outdoor area?

The system is designed to primarily work indoors and uses infra-red scanning to build its picture and needs vertical reference points to position itself. It can scan outdoors on cool, overcast days but will not work on bright sunny/ hot days. A 360 degree picture can always be taken though. Call us for more information.

  • I'd like to use a tour as a virtual retail outlet / shop. Is it possible to add links to other web pages or more information from within the tours?

Yes! Our tours are perfect for just such a project. They are also ideal for restaurants and bars looking to sell the experience online with links to special offers / menus etc.

  • Will the tours work on my yacht?

Yes! We have already scanned a number of vessels and received very positive feedback. We need a flat-calm day and, ideally, the boat to be moored alongside a pontoon.

  • We are a number of small businesses in a village, can you provide a tour of our village centre and add links to each of our shops / gallery?

What a great idea! We'd be very happy to work with you on that project

  • What area do you cover?

We cover the South West of the UK, based in West Cornwall. For scans more than a one hour journey from our base, we charge a competitive additional mileage and hourly rate.

  • I would like to hire a professional 3D photographer to scan a space for me. How do I arrange that?

Call us and we will be happy to discuss your requirements and book an appointment, or, you can email us here.
